World stock markets point higher after Donald Trump claims victory

European stock markets opened higher, and Wall Street looks set to rise sharply in pre-session trading.

European stock markets open higher on Wednesday in the face of the prospect of a return to the White House by Donald Trump, who claimed victory, also announced by Fox News. In early trading, the Paris Bourse was well ahead (1.11%), with London gaining 0.86%, Frankfurt 0.82% and Milan 0.63%.

Meanwhile, Wall Street is heading for a sharply higher opening after Trump claimed victory in the US presidential election, according to stock index futures, which give an indication of trends before the session begins. At around 08:30 GMT, the contract for the leading Dow Jones index was up 2.24%, that for the broader S&P 500 index was up 2.00%, while that for the tech-heavy Nasdaq was up 1.65%.
