MONEY OUT THE WINDOW – In La Remaudière, a small commune in the Nantes vineyards, the municipality embarked on a 2 million euro project some ten years ago. Too costly, the building, which was to be used for private and community events, was eventually demolished.
On this November morning, the silhouette of the building emerges from the fog. Away from the center of the small commune of La Remaudière, near the stadium, the multi-purpose hall is immersed in a deafening silence. The ambient greyness and biting cold amplify the ghostly aspect of the totally abandoned site. Here, in the heart of the Nantes vineyards, lies one of the most spectacular examples of wasted public money: a facility built by the municipality for over two million euros, between 2012 and 2014, which should soon be demolished… without ever having hosted a single event. An appalling waste that has almost ruined this village of barely 1300 inhabitants.
The story goes back a dozen years. At the time, the mayor, Alan-Erwan Coraud, decided to build a multi-purpose hall… “because there was a lack of them in the region”.. The 1072 m2 building was to “meet the expectations of the associative world”. and “host a whole host of private events such as weddings, christenings and senior tea dances”..
