CRITIQUE – The choreographer seems to have found himself with this piece in which he choreographs songs by Jeff Buckley. It premiered this Tuesday evening at the Seine musicale, and looks set for a successful career.
Hats off to M. Millepied! It’s light, it’s dancey, it’s gripping and it lasts 2h45. What’s it about? At Gracethe latest opus by the choreographer trained at the New York City Ballet and dedicated to Jeff Buckley. An itinerary in 23 songs and two acts, in which Millepied combines theater, video, music and twelve dancers. Clearly, the dance exudes the freedom that inspired the gestures that came over from the States. It also exudes a musicality of moods and atmospheres characteristic of Jerome Robbins, Millepied’s master and mentor. Certainly, Grace is not West Side Story. But the piece could find its place on Broadway, alongside compositions by Twyla Tharp, for example. Except that it flourishes on the vast stage of the Seine Musicalewith its excellent sound system, much better than the vintage theaters on 5th Avenue.
