“We can’t seem to improve our efficiency”, Parisians stunned by another C1 disappointment

A number of Parisian players share their thoughts on Wednesday’s 1-2 defeat by Atlético at the Parc des Princes.

Warren Zaïre-Emery (PSG midfielder, after the 1-2 loss to Atlético ) : “It’s often the same thing… Every game, we create a lot of chances, but the only thing we lack is the ability to score, to make those chances count… Do you need a striker? We have our game plan. Our game plan is always the same, and we create a lot of chances. If we scored all our chances, we wouldn’t be talking about matches (in the same way). Lack of confidence in front of goal? I wouldn’t know… Sometimes soccer is like that. It’s a lot, it’s repeated, we work to (improve) in training, we finish, we concentrate in front of goal… Frankly, I don’t know what to tell you. What’s the mid-term assessment? Looking at the points, it’s negative. But when you look at the games, it’s pretty positive. The only thing really lacking is the realization of our chances. Are you worried? No. Some periods are like that. That’s soccer. We weren’t lucky last season either… Sometimes it’s like that. We’re going to do everything we can to turn this situation around. Qualification? We’re not worried. We do everything we can to win every game, we give our all in every match. That’s one of the things we’ve got to keep up, we’ve got to keep creating chances, dominating, being in the opposition half, counter-pressing, which we do very well, and that should do it… if we score our chances. (on his goal) It’s a great goal, a great collective recovery from pressing, I’m very happy with the goal but also disappointed and frustrated for the team, for everyone.” (in mixed zone)

Vitinha (PSG midfielder) : “It’s difficult… We started well, we scored, we took a goal on an error of concentration, the kind of detail that makes the difference. And after that, we couldn’t find the best way to create chances, to attack, to keep a cool head. We tried. We wanted to win. We tried until the last minute. Unfortunately, we took that goal… It’s tough. A centre-forward? You never know. We have our game plan. We can improve, especially by keeping a cool head. We had the chances, again, and we didn’t score. It’s hard to take that goal… (…) We’ve got the level. There are four games left and we’ll do everything we can to get through.” (on Canal+)

In some matches, we make mistakes but we’re not penalized. Especially in Ligue 1. But there are some great players in front of us.

Marquinhos

Willian Pacho (PSG defender) : “It’s difficult, very sad about the defeat. It’s always complicated, but even more so after this kind of match, when you have the chances and you deserve to win. Now we have to pick ourselves up and move on. (…) Sometimes it doesn’t go in. We need to work on that, stay together, trust our team-mates and work hard. Four points in four games? It’s difficult, we missed some important points at home, which is where we should be winning the most. But, as I say, that’s soccer and now we have to be more united than ever, think about the next game and carry on step by step, trusting each other. What if we’re missing a centre-forward? We’re a good team, and I have every confidence in my team-mates. Our attacking players are very good, but for all good teams, there are times when the ball doesn’t go in. We’ve got to keep going and keep working and keep working as a team and support each other. Qualification? We need to reach the last 16. (in mixed zone)

Marquinhos (PSG defender) : “We had the confidence, the hope of winning. We’d already dropped points against PSV and we knew it was an important win to come away with. We gave it a go. It’s looking good, we’re playing well, we’re creating chances, which wasn’t the case at the start of the season, we’re making progress in certain areas, but we can’t seem to improve our efficiency. These are great matches. In some matches, we make mistakes, but we’re not penalized. Especially in Ligue 1. But here, we’re up against some great players. And if we make mistakes like that, we’re penalized. Their strategy was obvious. They have a lot of experience in this kind of match. We had a strategy in place and it didn’t work. What were the reasons for these difficulties in attack? If I had the answer, it would be easy. We’re working to do better in that area. We really need more composure in front of goal. We saw Warren (Zaire-Emery) do it, he scored. We create a lot of chances, we have the movement, we control the game, we create a lot, we play in their half… But it’s in the final pass, the finishing. And at the back too. The second goal was basically a corner for us. We’re all out in front and we make mistakes that cost us dearly… We weren’t well placed and they manage to counter… In this kind of big match, we’ve seen teams win championships by using their opponents’ mistakes like that. That’s something we need to improve on. We’ve already said it in the dressing room. There’s no room for error now in this competition. We’re going to have some big games and we’ll need to pick up points to qualify.

Worried? Four points from four games, including three at home, means we’ll have to pick up some tough points away from home. We know it’s going to be difficult, but we’re PSG and if we have to take points, we’ll do it. We’ll have to play with the cards we’ve got. We’re not going to throw everything away because we didn’t succeed. There are still games to be played. But the truth is, if we want to win games, we have to do things well in order to get closer to victory, but we’re penalized on the details and if we want to grow in this very difficult competition, we don’t have the right to miss out on that.” (on Canal+)
