Vladimir Mayakovsky’s Around the World: Extra-Soviet Peregrinations

CRITIQUE – In the 1920s, the poet traveled to Berlin, then Paris. In 1925, he crossed the Atlantic to the United States, Mexico and Cuba.

In the 1990s, Maurice Nadeau launched a superb collection, combining his Literary Fortnight at the Louis Vuitton trunk-maker. Entitled “Voyager avec…” (Travelling with…), it focused on writers of the twentieth century.e century, eager to explore far-off lands. The catalog features works by Valery Larbaud, Blaise Cendrars, Paul Morand, Michel Tournier and Claudio Magris, with commentary. There is also a volume devoted to Vladimir Mayakovsky, recently republished by Les Belles Lettres.

In it, we meet this descendant of Zaporogues Cossacks, through his extra-Soviet peregrinations in the 1920s. The ex-Futurist poet and champion of the revolution settled in Berlin, then Paris, where he met up again with his father. Elsa Trioletsister of his great love Lili Brik. There he meets StravinskyPicasso, Cocteau. Then, in 1925, it was off to America for an extensive tour.

He produced a magnificent reportage, describing the beach at Coney Island…
