Tribute to Giovanni Sarti, the charming maestro of Italian painting in Paris

A self-taught antiquarian, this connoisseur of Italian primitives, who died in September, was universally acclaimed for his curiosity, erudition and talent for discovery.

He was one of the great connoisseurs of Italian painting in France, particularly of the Madonnas with Child or Crucifixion on a gold background, whose quality and rarity he could gauge at a glance. But the culture of this self-taught man, an antique dealer before becoming a gallery owner of ancient paintings, went beyond that. Driven by an unquenchable passion, he often knew more than the academic specialists.

Giovanni SartiGiovanni Sarti, who died on September 18 at the age of 81, gathered his family, colleagues and friends for the last time at a mass in the church of Saint-Philippe-du-Roule on Friday November 15. The tribute was organized by his family and his wife Claire, daughter of surrealist painter Gérard Vulliamy and granddaughter of the poet. Paul Eluard and his first wife, Galaborn Elena Ivanovna Diakonova in 1894 in Kazan, Russian Empire.
