Thousands of people in the Philippines have moved to temporary shelters as a new typhoon approaches, local authorities announced on Thursday, a few days after the death of of a hundred residents in another typhoon and storm.
Typhoon Yinxing, with winds of 175 km/h, is due to make landfall on Thursday or early Friday, according to the national meteorological agency, which anticipates that its path will pass through the province of Cagayan, in the north of the island of Luzon, home to some 1.3 million people.
At least 17,000 residents of the province’s coastal areas joined temporary shelters on Wednesday to protect themselves from possible flooding as heavy rains hit the region, local relief official Rueli Rapsing told AFP.
Schools have been closed in many localities in the northern Philippines, and President Ferdinand Marcos has placed government agencies on high alert to enable rapid assistance if needed.
