“There will be no return to the taxe d’habitation”, promises Minister Catherine Vautrin

At a time when some elected representatives are calling for a return to the taxe d’habitation, which will be abolished in 2023 for principal residences, the Minister for Partnership with the Territories and Decentralization has closed the door on this possibility.

“There will be no return to the taxe d’habitation on principal residences”promised Catherine Vautrin, the French Minister for Partnerships with Territories and Decentralization, to the Parisien this Saturday, November 2. While the Michel Barnier calls for savings from local authorities, many elected representatives demand the restoration of property taxwhich will be abolished in 2023 for principal residences.

“On the other hand, I am ready to resume work on taxation (…) to see how we can enable local authorities to better control their resources”, said the Minister. “We need to think about possible participation in the fact of living in the town or village. Nothing is free, she assures us.

“Without recreating a form of taxe d’habitation, making everyone aware of their responsibility for the cost seems to me to be a requirement we can’t do without”, she told our colleagues.
