Mission impossible. When Michel Barnier’s mandate was presented in this way the day after his appointment to Matignon, the first thing that came to mind was the political equation. Impossible to hold on with such a minority and heterogeneous “common base”; impossible to adopt a medium-term perspective with the sword of Damocles of a motion of censure voted jointly by the left and the Rassemblement national.
The focus on the fragility of the partisan edifice has obscured the fact that the prime minister’s main challenge remains to respond to the country’s difficulties, and to find solutions to urgent problems or categorical demands.
