Danny Jordaan is being prosecuted for fraud after being arrested on Wednesday, the South African police announced.
The president of the South African Football Association (Safa) and former chairman of the 2010 World Cup organizing committee Danny Jordaan is being prosecuted for fraud after being arrested on Wednesday, South African police announced. Elected for the third time to the Safa presidency in 2013, Danny Jordaan was arrested for “allegations of fraud and theft amounting to 1.3 million rand (68,000 euros)”, the police statement said.
Aged 73, he is accused of hiring a private security company for his own protection and a public relations firm without the authorization of the Federation’s board of directors. Danny Jordaan allegedly hired the latter after accusations in 2017 of sexual assault by a South African singer, who is also a former member of parliament. Danny Jordaan denied the allegations, which dated back 25 years.
Also arrested on Wednesday, Safa finance director Gronie Hluyo and businessman Trevor Neethling, director of the communications company involved, also denied the accusations. All three were released on bail by the court.
