In view of the weather, this has been the most useful piece of clothing in recent weeks, especially for women cyclists. After testing a significant number of waterproof coats, here’s our test bench of the most worthwhile models.
The most desirable Sister x K-Way collab
Vanessa, 48 years old: “I’ve been cycling in Paris for thirty years, and I haven’t found anything better than this cape, except maybe the Guy Cotten oilskin, but in town I’d rather get wet than look like a Breton on the town. In this case, it succeeds in not breaking the pace, which is quite a feat for a waterproof cape. People stop me at red lights to ask me where I got it! What I really like about it is its length: it goes down to mid-calf. So, on my saddle, it covers my legs right down to my ankles, with only the tips of my pumps sticking out and getting a few drops. It’s made from a material specially developed for this capsule, and is highly water-repellent. It’s very light and roomy (which means you have to zip it up tightly, otherwise it could get caught on the rear wheel), and can be worn with a mini down jacket or wool coat tucked underneath. A special mention goes to the hood, which is large enough to go over the helmet and brave heavy showers!
The Longer Jacket from Rains, the most family-friendly of all
Noémie, 41 years old. “I’ve been wearing it for several years, and I have to say it’s very practical: buttoned from top to bottom (I hate parkas you have to put on), water-repellent fabric, hood with visor, flap pockets…. I already had the original model, but I recently bought back the longer version, in gray, size M, so that it could help out the whole family: me, my husband, the (big) kids… With the weather last September and October, I didn’t let it go and I was really well protected. Well, except on the day of the downpour, but what jacket could have held out?
The Loewe x On parka, the most designer of all
Valérie, 45 years old. “When I put it on, my husband regularly makes fun of me, asking me if I’m going on operation Covid. Indeed, the white and the hood make me look like an orderly in an infectiology department. But the immaculate color also makes me more visible on the road than with a black or dark-colored model, and it’s always more chic than the fluorescent yellow or orange, too “DDE agent” for me (to each his own) of other rain capes. But its best asset is its weight: it weighs nothing, its technical material is as light as a feather and as thin as cigarette paper. It doesn’t take up any space in my bag, once rolled into a ball when it stops raining. And that’s priceless – because it’s true that it’s not cheap!
Uniqlo’s Blocktech coat, the most basic one
Zoé, 17 years old. “The hood isn’t great, it falls down all the time, it’s annoying… But otherwise, it’s cool, the pockets are big, I can put lots of stuff in them (my keys, chewing gum, tissues, my Navigo pass, a hair clip…). And I have to admit, it’s really waterproof, even when it was pouring in Paris last month. My father borrowed it from me recently to protect himself on his bike, and said he found it a bit short – his pants were soaked through.“
Vivi Mari’s most printed leopard cape
Agathe, 35 years old. “It’s just as practical on the beach or on a walk in the forest when it’s raining, as it is in town when I have to brave a downpour to get to an appointment. I’ve had it for two years, and I still love it because not only is it effective, it’s also beautiful! I’ve tried a lot of models, often ugly ones, and I get stuck on wearing the right jeans, nice boots, a trendy top, a cool piece of jewelry, and over it all a hideous raincoat… Well, its only flaw, which I’m willing to admit is shared by all raincoats, is that it’s not very breathable… It protects against rain, but not against perspiration! So you don’t want to be late and have to run. “
Decathlon’s fluorescent poncho, the ultimate in road safety
Diane, 56 years old. “It’s not the prettiest cape, it’s true, but I don’t care, because I always travel with a big tote bag into which I slip it as soon as I get somewhere. I even carry matching pants in my tote, just in case of heavy showers. I chose this model for its affordable price (so I can renew it as soon as the waterproofing is less good), but above all for its fluorescent color, so that it can be seen by motorists and other cyclists. Although I’m used to cycling in Paris, I find the traffic increasingly dangerous. I feel safer with this color on my back.”
