San Francisco’s progressive showcase collapses

REPORTAGE – Hated by Republicans, the permissive city was recently forced to strengthen its police powers to bring some order back to its streets.

The mayor of San Francisco, London Breed, has just stood in front of the microphones set up on the sidewalk of the Vuitton boutique in Union Square, the central square around which the luxury boutiques of the Californian city fan out. The day before, in the middle of the night, a car rammed through the window with the intention of robbing the store. But police were conducting a sweep of the neighborhood, and the burglars escaped without being able to carry out their deed. Two other cars were waiting for them.
