In this totally unpredictable election, there was just about one certainty. The Democrats were likely to lose their 51-vote majority in the Senate. The Republicans had only two seats to win and benefited from a very favorable electoral map. Of the 100 seats renewed by thirds every two years, 34 were renewed this year, 8 of which were very closely contested. Of these, 7 were held by Democrats.
In the end, Republicans regained control of the Senate for the first time in four years. It’s still too early to know the extent of their victory, as late Wednesday morning in Washington the results of 5 ballots were still pending.
