Galatasaray’s Argentinian striker Mauro Icardi, who went off injured on Thursday during the Turkish club’s 3-2 victory over Tottenham in the Europa League, has suffered a cruciate ligament rupture, his club announced on Friday.
“A rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament and damage to the meniscus have been detected in his right knee.”said Galatasaray in a statement, adding that their star striker would undergo surgery shortly.
The Stamboulian club did not specify how long the player would be unavailable, but according to the Turkish sports press, the former Paris SG and Inter Milan player’s season is in jeopardy. N.9 was stretchered off in the 83rd minute of Thursday’s game after injuring himself while pressing on the Tottenham goalkeeper.
The 31-year-old striker, who joined Istanbul in September 2022 and has scored six goals in all competitions this season, was later filmed limping out of the stadium. Galatasaray beat Tottenham Spurs 3-2 at home on Thursday, thanks to a brace from their other star striker, Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen, to move up to 3rd place in the C3 league phase, with 10 points after four games.
