Before heading for the Place de l’Étoile, the two leaders met for talks at the Palais de l’Élysée. The two leaders then headed straight for the Champs-Élysées. First to lay a wreath and take part in a minute’s silence at the foot of the statue of Georges Clemenceau, near the Grand Palais. Emmanuel Macron and Keir Starmer then visited the tomb of the Unknown Soldier beneath the Arc de Triomphe. An important symbol, since 80 years ago, General de Gaulle and Winston Churchill commemorated the Armistice on the same spot for the first time since the Liberation of France.
The French president rekindled the Flame of the Nation alongside veterans and families of servicemen who died for France, after the sounding of the “Cessez-le-Feu” and the laying of a new wreath. The Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, also laid a wreath. Prime Minister Michel Barnier, Armed Forces Minister Sébastien Lecornu, Culture Minister Rachida Dati and former President Nicolas Sarkozy were also present at the ceremony in Place de l’Étoile.
