Long sidelined by recurring injuries, Nick Kyrgios is set to make his return to official competition in early 2025 to prepare for a possible final Australian Open in front of his home crowd.
Love him or hate him, this is good news for tennis. After playing just one match in two years due to knee, foot and wrist injuries, the former Wimbledon finalist is back in action. Nick Kyrgios will return to competition at the Brisbane Open, a warm-up event for the Australian Open in December-January, the organizers announced on Friday on X.
A return to exhibition action already planned
Australian Kyrgios is also due to take part in the World Tennis League’s exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi from December 19-22, while Australian Open chief Craig Tiley said last month that he hoped to see the 29-year-old play in the Grand Slam season opener next year.
“The Brisbane Open has always been a great event and I’ve had some amazing memories there, especially when I won the event in 2018.”He went on to reach the Wimbledon final and the U.S. Open quarter-finals before injuries began to take their toll. “I feel fit and healthy, and I’m excited to be back playing tennis after some time away.”. “One of my goals was to be able to play during the Australian summer, so I’m delighted to be starting in Brisbane, which is one of my favourite tournaments.”.
The Brisbane Open runs from December 29 to January 5, and Kyrgios will be looking to regain his fitness in time for the Australian Open, which runs from January 12 to 26. Kyrgios has often been among the outsiders at the Australian Open, exiting in the second round on his last singles appearance at Melbourne Park in 2022, losing to eventual finalist Daniil Medvedev.
