Lyon’s clean sweep against Roma (0-3) puts them top of their group.
Lyon moved to the top of Group A of the Women’s Champions League after beating Italy on Wednesday.AS Roma (3-0) at the Stadio Tre Fontane in Rome on Matchday 3, thanks in particular to a brace from Haitian international striker Melchie Dumornay.
After seeing the goalkeeper advance, Dumornay lobbed the ball home from almost 50 meters to give OL a 2-0 lead (41st). She had opened the scoring with a close-range finish from a loose ball following a cross from Dzsenifer Marozsan (36th). These two goals, the first two by the 21-year-old Haitian in the competition this season, were the culmination of a first-half dominance by Lyon.
Dumornay could have added a third, but her deflected shot went just wide (51st). She was replaced in the 82nd minute by Eugénie Le Sommer, who entered at the same time as Sarah Däbritz and Vicky Becho. However, the second-half substitutions altered the cohesion of the Lyon team after half-time, once Canadian Vanessa Gilles made it 3-0 from a corner (52nd).
Only Amel Majri (77th) and Becho (87th) had any real chance of extending the lead, while Tabitha Chawinga went off in the 69th minute without having been able to unlock her account in the competition.
Lyon, with three wins in as many matches and no goals conceded in the competition, are now top of the group with a three-point lead over the Romans, who have won two and lost one. The two teams will meet again on November 20 at the Groupama stadium in Décines-Charpieu for the next round of C1 matches, with the chance for OL to secure qualification and take a strong lead in the group.
