Lyon had been calmer in attack for a few minutes. Cherki tried his luck from outside the box, but his shot went wide.

The referee announces seven minutes of additional time, due to the interruption at the start of the match.

Caleta-Car’s first-half clearance was a real blot on the Gones’ copybook, as he failed to clear the ball at all, leaving Davitashvili with a dangerous opportunity. The Gones defender was forced to cut out the ball. He was given a caution.

A few minutes earlier, Lucas Stassin and Augustine Boakye were booked in quick succession. The former for a dangerous late foul and the latter for cutting Fofana close to goal.

From a free-kick, there was panic (again) in the Verts defense, Larsonneur pushed away before being beaten by Lacazette’s shot, fortunately Caleta-Car stepped on the ball instead of pushing it into the empty net. ASSE managed to pull away.

Maçon and Boakye are going through hell on their flanks. Malick Fofana accelerates and forces a foul. Lyon follow up with a free-kick from the edge of the box on the left.

ASSE did their best to clear the corner, but the ball fell to Maitland-Niles. The Briton tried his luck from distance, but his shot was easily saved by Larsonneur.

Cherki found Fofana deep in the box and he crossed directly to Veretout, who was unable to connect. The former Marseille man collapses and calls for a penalty, but the referee doesn’t flinch. Corner to follow.

The Greens are cornered, and this time it’s Fofana who has fun with the ASSE defense. Only the winger enters the area and curls his shot, which is saved for a corner by Gautier Larsonneur.

Fofana is on the move, dribbling past Maçon before firing in a low cross. Lacazette is too short and ASSE can clear. Lyon are finally in the game.

Lyon’s triplet, Fofana-Cherki-Lacazette, combine well together. The latter two came dangerously close, but Larsonneur was soon at Cherki’s feet.

The first thrill on Lyon’s goal. From a Green corner, Perri uses his fists to push the ball away. Hampered by the fog, the Lyon goalkeeper came close to missing.

The match doesn’t restart and the 22 players take the opportunity to warm up. The fog still hasn’t lifted.

In their own arena and with their own fans, Les Gones are superior to their nemesis. Since 2000, Saint-Étienne have won just two of their 21 meetings in Lyon, drawing six and losing 13.

In 8th place with 15 points, Lyon must win to keep their European hopes alive. Saint-Étienne, for their part, are 16th and want to move away from the red zone.

This match has been classified as a very high risk match (5 out of 5) by the Direction nationale de lutte contre le hooliganisme (DNLH, part of the French Ministry of the Interior).

Same old, same old: Les Verts field the same team as for their win against Strasbourg (2-0) on the final day. Stassin is up front and will be supported by ASSE star Zuriko Davitashvili and Boakye on the wings. Behind them, Saint-Etienne’s defense will have to be solid, as the club has already conceded 24 goals in 10 games this season.
