Following the attacks on supporters of the Israeli club in Amsterdam, the country’s authorities prefer to take precautions.
Israeli authorities have called on fans to avoid an Maccabi Tel-Aviv against Bologna in Italy on Friday, the day after violence broke out on the sidelines of a soccer match involving the same club in Amsterdam.
“Calls to harm Israelis and Jews continue to multiply on social networks, and there are fears that the events of the last 24 hours could lead to a wave of similar actions and further unrest and attacks on Israelis abroad“, said the Israeli Prime Minister’s office. “In light of this, the National Security Council (NSC) advises Israelis to avoid attending the Maccabi Tel-Aviv match in Bologna and to avoid as much as possible displaying visible Israeli or Jewish symbols“they added.
Maccabi’s basketball section is due to take on Virtus Bologna this Friday at 20:30 (19:30 GMT) in Italy as part of the men’s Eurologue. Bologna’s Prefect of Police has stepped up security measures for the match, which are already high, and has assigned a special escort to the Israeli team, according to Italian agencies.
“Growing anti-Semitism is unacceptable and horrific, and it is our duty to guarantee full security for all citizens of the Jewish faith,” said Italy’s head of government, Giorgia Meloni, in a statement. Five people were briefly hospitalized and 62 others arrested, the Dutch police announced after the clashes that took place on Thursday evening in Amsterdam on the sidelines of the soccer match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel-Aviv.
