“In Aznavour Celebration, we hear my father’s voice again for the first time”.

The youngest of Charles Aznavour’s children has conceived a symphonic concert in which his father will be heard singing over often previously unseen footage. In Paris on November 23, Sylvie Vartan, Thomas Dutronc and Alain Chamfort will be on stage.

In the Aznavour clan, each child had his or her own way of paying tribute to the late patriarch. His daughter Katia and her son-in-law, producer Jean Rachid Kallouche, have been heavily involved in the Aznavour project. biopic Monsieur Aznavour directed by Grand Corps Malade and Mehdi Idir. It was their project. Nicolas Aznavour supported his wife, who discovered a talent for singing and covered her father-in-law’s repertoire on stage.

Misha, the youngest of Ulla and Charles Aznavour’s three children, was not to be outdone. After winning a literary prize Aznavour des Mots d’Amour awarded each year in Paris in May, and a documentary film Le Regard de Charles released in 2019, in which Romain Duris commented on footage filmed between 1940 and 1982 by Charles Aznavour himself, he’s back at it again. His idea? A special concert in which he hopes to please his father’s loyal fans and attract the new generation who came out in droves to see the biopic. Misha saw the film this summer at a screening for family and childhood friends in Geneva, where his mother, Ulla Aznavour, lives. “She received a link to see it. She doesn’t like to leave the house too much and it’s not easy for her to see these images.” confides Misha Aznavour, who really enjoyed the film. Still in theatres, this biopic starring Tahar Rahim is poised to top the two million box-office mark. “It’s much more than my film’s box-office. Le regard de Charles made with Marc di Domenico. Released in late 2019, it attracted just 16 000 spectators in cinemas, but it can be seen on platforms such as Canal +”.jokes Misha Aznavour.

I really enjoyed the ciné-concert dedicated to Claude Lelouch, and I wanted to do a similar concert for my father.

This time, the youngest of Ulla and Charles Aznavour’s three children wanted to go one step further. He and conductor Vahan Mardirossian are rehearsing a tribute concert to his famous father in Douai, northern France. The production and orchestration team is the same as for the tribute concerts to Claude Lelouch, Alain Delon and soon Chico & the Gypsis. “I really liked the ciné-concert dedicated to Claude Lelouch I wanted to do a similar concert for my father”, explains Misha Aznavour. The two-hour“Aznavour Celebration will be an opportunity to evoke the many facets of Charles Aznavour: the actor, the singer, the man and the family man.

There have been many tribute concerts to the great Charles since his sudden death on October 1, 2018 at the age of 94. This time, for the first time, audiences will hear his voice again. Not that of another singer. “I wrote a poetic text with what a son would like to say to his father, which will serve as a common thread throughout the show, explains Misha Aznavour. In the 1960s, I wasn’t born, so that’s what I imagine my parents were like. As if I were a spectator. You won’t see me on stage, I’m too much of a stalker, so my voice will be offstage. On stage, an 80-strong orchestra will play his great songs. His voice will be illustrated by images projected on a giant screen. Many of them are taken from my personal archives, the INA and my film Le regard de Charles. His dream? That Aznavour devotees and all the young people who have pushed open the cinema door to see Monsieur Aznavour are back together. The show opens in Douai on November 21, then heads for the Palais des Congrès, Aznavour’s favourite Paris venue, on November 23, and the Geneva Arena on December 11. “This time, maybe my mother will come”.says Misha Aznavour. On each date, guests will join the musicians on stage. In Paris, Sylvie Vartan will be there. So will Thomas Dutronc and Alain Chamfort. In March 2025 in Los Angeles, health permitting, Liza Minnelli could make an appearance. Misha Aznavour is obviously not mounting this project for financial reasons. “The profits will go to my association Aznavour pour l’Amour. This will help finance the Aznavour literary prize for Words of Love.”
