Gabby Williams, star of the French team, is “scared” after Trump’s election

Gabby Williams, Les Bleues basketball star and Franco-American, has shared her concerns about her “feminine and human rights” following the election of Donald Trump.

Gabby Williams wore France’s colors high this summer, establishing herself as Les Bleues’ best basketball player, beaten on penalties by the USA in the final of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games (66-67). She was even recipient of the Alain Gilles trophywhich rewards the best French basketball player of the season. But the Franco-American is no less connected to her country of birth, and concerned by the recent election of Donald Trump, new President of the United States.

“We must respect the choice of our democracy. But it scares me.”shares Gabby Williams in an interview with the newspaper Le Parisien . The 28-year-old, who recently left Villeurbanne for Turkish club Fenerbahce, often plays in the WNBA in her native country during the summer. She “thinking about starting a family”but the return to power of Trump, known for his many racist and misogynistic comments and opposed to abortion rights, worries her.

“I’m stressing about my women’s and human rights, Williams continues. If he takes away women’s rights and touches freedoms, it’s going to be complicated. When I go back, I’ll feel less safe in the United States.” And he adds that “people who support Trump” do it “think of a cult”. Of French origin on her mother’s side and a perfect French speaker, Williams has 48 caps for Les Bleues. Prior to her silver medal at the 2024 Olympics, she had bronze at the Tokyo Games and silver at Euro 2021.
