Faith Ringgold, whose mother was a seamstress, had a special bond with fashion.

EXCLUSIVE – Before her recent death, the American artist signed six exceptional bags for Dior, on the initiative of Maria Grazia Chiuri. The artistic director of the Avenue Montaigne fashion house tells us about the project behind the scenes.

Faith Ringgold is a legend of Black America (1930-2024), the pioneer of African-American art to whom the New Museum in New York paid tribute in spring 2022, then, in a concentrated version, the Picasso Museum in Paris, in 2023. It was in the wake of the New Museum that the dialogue between this major figure of committed painting, an early American feminist, and Maria Grazia Chiuri the first woman to be appointed artistic director of women’s collections for Dior.

Just before his death on April 13, 2024 at the age of 93, Faith Ringgold not only imagined the decor for the house’s haute couture collection (presented last June), but also designed six exceptional bags for the 9e edition of Dior Lady Art, revealed this November 7 in boutiques. Humor, pop strength of the portraits, quilting, contrasting colors, they take up several of her works including Freedom Woman Now and Woman Free Yourself messages…
