Pablo Longoria’s sports consultant, whose contract runs until December, could sign a new contract with the Marseille club, according to L’Equipe.
Arrived in October 2023, Mehdi Benatia has made his mark at Olympique de Marseille. From his statements on the Jonathan Clauss case to a summer mercato in which he was involved in the arrival of some big names such as De Zerbi, Hojbjerg and Rabiot, the 37-year-old has become a strong man in the Marseille clan. So much so that OM now wants to install him as sporting director, according to information from The Team .
Until then, Benatia had “only” the role of sports advisor to club president Pablo Longoria, due to the contract linking him to an agent company which prevents him from obtaining executive status. With his contract due to expire on December 5, OM are said to be preparing a contract to keep one of their key men at the club as a player. In an interview with RMC, the former captain of the Moroccan national team made it clear that he intended to stay at Marseille. “I don’t even need to talk about a contract, I don’t care, what’s it going to do to my life? I’m here to serve the president, to serve the coach, to try and attract the best players and give them the best mentality possible.”
