Paris Photo 2024 returns to the renovated Grand Palais in style. No stand. A huge wall, 36.5 m long and 3.5 m high, features some 619 portraits of 20th-century Germany.e century to all visitors entering the nave. “ People of the 20th Century “ is the major work of the great German photographer, August Sander (1876-1964).
This is the panoramic portrait of a nation, classified by archetype, from which museums have drawn extensively for their exhibitions, such as “Germany, 1920s, New Objectivity, August Sander” at the Centre Pompidou in 2022. But this time, they’re all there. Glances that look coldly at the lens, never smiling, from the vagabond to the artist couple. Otto Dix and his wife Martha, from peasant to musician, from idiots to political prisoners. A fascinating and slightly chilling experience.
