Breeders and luxury goods manufacturers forge closer ties to safeguard French leather

RECIT – Declining livestock numbers, parasites: tanneries and the luxury goods industry are worried about a drop in volumes and quality of French leathers. Projects are being launched to improve practices.

It’s the meat that pays us. Farmer with a herd of around fifty cows in Corrèze, Franck Terrieux earns his income from the production of veal calves. This Label Rouge meat is sold at around ten euros per kilo-carcass, i.e. around 1,500 euros per animal. Until recently, however, Franck Terrieux had no idea where the skins went, as they were sold directly by the abattoir, without any dedicated premiums.

Used for luxury gloves and shoes, calf leather is nevertheless among the most sought-after. Since 2020, as part of a project called Fecna, the breeder has been trying to improve its quality by treating the animals more regularly against lice, and limiting the causes of injuries.
