At Howard University, Kamala Harris admits defeat in front of a crowd of students worried about the future

A few thousand Democratic supporters were back on campus Wednesday for the defeated candidate’s speech, calling on them to “not to give up”.

A strange calm, considering the extreme polarization that marked the end of the campaign, hangs over the crowd back at Washington’s Howard University to hear Kamala Harris admit defeat. The evening before, shortly before one o’clock in the morning, thousands of Democratic students, activists and supporters had left the campus in a state of anxiety. A party official had just told them that the candidate would not speak until she had a clearer picture of the situation in all the swing states.
