The referee then blew his whistle for a penalty, which Martinez and his defence found incomprehensible. The penalty was then converted by Belgian Hans Vanaken. The score remained unchanged and Club Brugge won 1-0. This is the first goal Aston Villa have conceded in the Champions League this season. Brugge are 20th in the group stage standings and Aston Villa 5th.
