He has a clear vision of what he wants to show, and doesn’t bother with delays or unnecessary convolutions: he shoots the first version of the script whose story he likes, without substantial changes. The director doesn’t guide his actors; the first take is enough for him, and whatever is shot is generally reflected on screen. At first glance, these characteristics don’t seem to point to a cinematic genius. However, over fifty years of filming, observation and a discipline that has enabled him to make up to two films a year, make him a true genius.
