Universal Music accuses Believe of pirating tracks by its star artists

DECRYPTAGE – The major and two other record companies are claiming $500 million in damages from the French company.

It’s a case that’s likely to cause quite a stir in the music industry. Monday evening, Universal Music Group (UMG)along with Concord Music Group and ABKCO Music & Records have decided to take legal action against Believe and its American distribution company, TuneCore. The reason: the massive and continuous violations of their sound recordings. Founded in 2005 by Denis Ladegaillerie and based in Paris, Believe specializes in supporting and distributing independent artists and labels on streaming platforms, social networks and more. Present in 50 countries, the company claims to work with 1 million artists, including Jul, Vianney or Vincent Delerm in France.

In a complaint filed in Manhattan federal court in New York, UMG, the world’s largest music major, Concord Music Group and ABKCO accuse Believe of knowingly distributing tracks…
