Brazilian striker Pepê interrupted a move when FC Porto had a great chance to score against Estoril on Sunday. The cause was an injury to an opposing defender.
It was a rare sight in top-level soccer. With FC Porto leading 1-0 against Estoril in the Portuguese league, Brazilian winger Pepê found himself thrown deep. The Porto player won a duel with left-back Pedro Amaral, who promptly collapsed in the box, clutching his right thigh. Rather than follow through on an action that looked set to give Porto a major goal-scoring opportunity, Pepê stopped. The referee stopped play.
Estoril players came out to thank Pepê for his fair play to the whistles of the fans at the Dragon stadium. Amaral went off injured and Pepê quickly made the fans forget his choice, scoring his team’s 2nd goal in the 28th minute. Porto ran out 4-0 winners to move to within three points of Portuguese league leaders Sporting, and take a five-point lead over Benfica.
