INTERVIEW – The author ofOSS 117 and The Artist devoted six years to The Most Precious Commodity. This highly personal animated film about the Holocaust was adapted from Jean-Claude Grumberg’s fairy tale.

In the hushed salons of a hotel in the 6th arrondissement of Parise arrondissement de Paris, Michel Hazanavicius is relaxed as he talks about his new feature film, The Most Precious Commoditypresented at Cannes Film Festival last May, in official competition.

A far cry from his previous work, this animated film about the Holocaust is an adaptation of a tale by Jean-Claude Grumberg. It took the filmmaker six years to complete the project.

LE FIGARO. – Why did you choose animation to adapt Jean-Claude Grumberg’s tale? ?

MICHEL HAZANAVICIUS. – Before thinking about animation, I had to adapt a book by Jean-Claude Grumberg that I had read and liked very much. I wouldn’t have done it if someone had suggested live-action. Jean-Claude Grumberg had been a friend of my parents since they were 15. He saw me being born. He knew I drew. It was important for him to have a director who drew.
