“Whatever the best choice is to bring about change, I’d support that 100%,” slips Warren Gatland

New Zealand’s Wales coach has no qualms about handing over the reins following Sunday’s debacle against Australia. “But I still want to be part of the team,” he said.

Wales’ New Zealand coach Warren Gatland said on Sunday that he would accept to step down from his post after his country’s debacle against Australia. his team’s 11th defeat by Australia (52-20)but said he wanted to stay. “Absolutely”Gatland replied when asked if he still wanted to be coach, despite Wales having lost 17 of the 23 matches he has managed since returning to the bench.

“I do it because I love being involved in the game. I have so many great memories with Wales and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved.”said the man who led the team to victory in the Six Nations Tournament four times, including three Grand Slams, between 2007 and 2019. “It’s difficult at the moment. I’m human, so I’m wondering if it’s the right thing to do.”he conceded, six days before the Welsh team’s final match of the year against world champions South Africa.

What’s next? “I don’t know.”he replied. “Whatever is the best choice for us to bring about change (…) I would support that 100%. If that means me, then I’m comfortable with that.”he explained. “But I still want to be part of it” of the selection,” Gatland stressed.

Welsh legends Dan Biggar and Sam Warburton both questioned the need for change. “You wonder when it’s going to stop. But is a change of coach going to improve this team and suddenly make it win games?”asked Biggar on TNT Sports.
