60 minutes of talks between Scholz and Putin with a highly uncertain outcome

The Kremlin seems to be the sole beneficiary of the Chancellor’s initiative, which enables him to break out of his diplomatic isolation. The opposition CDU believes that Putin sees it “more as a sign of weakness than of strength”.

The telephone meeting between the German leader and his Russian counterpart, initiated by the former and devoted to possible talks on ending the war in Ukrainelasted around sixty minutes, and a photo of the chancellor, accompanied by his diplomatic adviser and spokesman, was shared on X under the title: “I demanded an end to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and the withdrawal of Russian troops. Russia must show itself ready for negotiations with the aim of a just and lasting peace”.
