REPORTAGE – The movement, which is inspired by methods that have proved successful in the West Bank, enjoys political and even military support.
For the moment, the Eli Gaza settlement is in Israel. Soon, its members assure us, they will be in the Gaza Strip. In the meantime, they have set up under the railway bridge along Route 34, between Sderot and Ashkelon, a few hundred meters from Palestinian territory.
This morning, a railway security team came to disperse the future settlers. They guard the site: a few plywood shacks, one of which serves as a synagogue, a fridge on a pallet, solar panels, children’s games scattered on the ground, tables. The pillars of the bridge have been sprayed with orange paint – the color of the back-to-the-land movement. Gush Katifnamed after the former Israeli settlements evacuated in 2005.
