It took Ridley Scott almost a quarter of a century to complete the sequel to his peplum Gladiator . Released in 2000, this film Russell Crowewho played the lead role of Maximus, to worldwide stardom and won him the Oscar for Best Actor. Since then, the most far-fetched script ideas have been peddled, discussed and then abandoned for a second installment. One such idea came from Nick Cave who imagined Russell Crowe’s character returning from the dead after dying a hero’s death. In Gladiator 2 (in cinemas from November 14), Ridley Scott stages the confrontations of Lucius, son of Maximus, against his opponents, first in the Colosseum, then against two despotic Roman emperors.
