before the Panathinaikos-Maccabi Tel Aviv match, security is stepped up

In Athens, security will be stepped up in the hours leading up to the Euroleague match between Panathinaikos and Maccabi Tel-Aviv. This decision comes after the recent attacks on Israeli supporters in Amsterdam during a soccer match.

Security around the Euroleague basketball match between Panathinaikos and Maccabi Tel-Aviv this Tuesday in Athens will be stepped up following the attacks against Israeli fans in Amsterdam last week, Greek police said. Some 1,500 police officers will be mobilized for the match, scheduled for 8.15pm. Only 40 supporters of the Israeli club had been given permission to be in the stands, the source said, adding that other fans had also wished to take part in the match but police, fearing possible scuffles, had refused.

Part of the force will be assigned to Maccabi supporters, while anti-terror police will escort the team bus. The Israeli embassy in Athens will also benefit from reinforced security.

This decision comes after the events of November 8. After a Europa League soccer match, Maccabi Tel-Aviv supporters were chased and beaten in the streets of Amsterdam. Twenty to 30 of them were injured after being attacked by groups of people who, according to the Dutch police, had responded to a call to target Jews on social networks.

These attacks, described as anti-Semitic by Israel and the Dutch authorities in particular, sparked outrage in many Western capitals. Isolated incidents broke out before the match, including anti-Arab chants chanted by Maccabi supporters.

This Thursday, security will also be stepped up around the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, for the France-Israel Nations League soccer match, with 4,000 police officers mobilized around and, unusually, inside the stadium.
