Despite the re-election of Donald Trumpillegal immigration into the United States continues. Mexican authorities announced on Sunday that they had discovered more than 250 migrants in a double semi-trailer headed for the US border.
Immigration officers backed by the army made the discovery on Friday at a checkpoint in the state of Chihuahua, the Ministry of Defense said. The migrants, of different nationalities, were handed over to immigration to check their status, while the driver was taken in charge by the public prosecutor’s office, the ministry added.
Every year, thousands of migrants fleeing violence and poverty cross Mexico on their way to the US border. Transporting migrants hidden in overloaded trucks is one of the most dangerous methods used by smugglers.
A dangerous crossing
In 2022, more than 50 migrants suffocated to death after being abandoned in a semi-trailer truck crossing the US-Mexico border into Texas. Other migrants attempt to cross the border by joining caravans on foot over vast distances, risking their lives.
The election of Donald Trump has heightened the concerns of migrants, who fear that it will become increasingly difficult to obtain asylum after he takes office in the White House.
Illegal entries fell from 250,000 in December to nearly 54,000 last September, according to the administration of Democratic President Joe Biden. The drop comes after Biden ordered the temporary closure of the border with Mexico in June once a daily threshold of migrants is reached.
