Iran has called for an arms embargo against Israel and its exclusion from the United Nations, following a strike in Syria that killed nine people on Sunday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH). The OSDH said at least nine people, including a Hezbollah commander, were killed in an Israeli strike south of Damascus on an apartment belonging to members of the Lebanese movement allied with Iran.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said. “strongly condemned today’s brutal attack by the Zionist regime on a residential building in Damascus.”. He also called for action against Israel, demanding “an arms embargo” and its “United Nations exclusion.
Frequent strikes
Since the start of the civil war in Syria in 2011, Israel has conducted hundreds of strikes on the neighboring country targeting the Syrian army and Tehran-backed groups, including Hezbollah, deployed in support of Syrian government forces.
The frequency of these strikes has increased since Israel went to open war with Hezbollah in Lebanon on September 23. Israel, which rarely comments on these strikes, has recently targeted crossings between Syria and Lebanon, accusing Hezbollah of using them to smuggle weapons from Syria.
A sworn enemy of Iran, Israel is at war with the Palestinian Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah in Lebanon, two movements allied with Teheran, which is also advocating a ceasefire on both fronts.
