LIVE – Lyon-Saint-Etienne: Lacazette leads the way for Les Gones

Almost three years since their last meeting in Ligue 1, Lyon and Stéphanois meet again this Sunday in what promises to be a fiercely contested duel.

Davitashvili’s shot (50th)

The Greens attempt to score, but Davitashvili’s shot is too hard, and Perri gets down well on the ball.

Niakhaté pushes back (48th)

Saint-Etienne came back with better intentions, Maçon on the right crossed low and Niakhaté was alert to push the ball back into touch.

Here we go again in Lyon

OL kicks off the second half.

It’s the break

The 22 players return to the dressing room, with Lyon leading by just one goal despite their clear domination. Les Verts can thank their heroic keeper Larsonneur. For Lyon, who else but Lacazette could have opened the scoring.

Cherki back on track (45+5)

Another combination between Cherki and Veretout. The former is on the end of it but the Greens defence closes in well.

Cherki tries (45+2)

Lyon had been calmer in attack for a few minutes. Cherki tried his luck from outside the box, but his shot went wide.

7 more minutes

The referee announces seven minutes of additional time, due to the interruption at the start of the match.

Caleta-Car finds a hole (40th)

Caleta-Car’s first-half clearance was a real blot on the Gones’ copybook, as he failed to clear the ball at all, leaving Davitashvili with a dangerous opportunity. The Gones defender was forced to cut out the ball. He was given a caution.

Les Verts twice warned (38th)

A few minutes earlier, Lucas Stassin and Augustine Boakye were booked in quick succession. The former for a dangerous late foul and the latter for cutting Fofana close to goal.

Caleta-Car steps on the ball (35th)

From a free-kick, there was panic (again) in the Verts defense, Larsonneur pushed away before being beaten by Lacazette’s shot, fortunately Caleta-Car stepped on the ball instead of pushing it into the empty net. ASSE managed to pull away.

Fofana elusive (34th)

Maçon and Boakye are going through hell on their flanks. Malick Fofana accelerates and forces a foul. Lyon follow up with a free-kick from the edge of the box on the left.

Maitland-Niles tries his luck (32nd)

ASSE did their best to clear the corner, but the ball fell to Maitland-Niles. The Briton tried his luck from distance, but his shot was easily saved by Larsonneur.

Fofana is back (31st)

Cherki found Fofana deep in the box and he crossed directly to Veretout, who was unable to connect. The former Marseille man collapses and calls for a penalty, but the referee doesn’t flinch. Corner to follow.

Le Général gets his team back on track (28th, 1-0)

From the corner, Les Gones punish the Greens. Alexandre Lacazette took Caleta-Car’s failed header to the far corner with his knee. Sixth derby goal for the Lyon centre-forward.

Larsonneur responds (27th)

The Greens are cornered, and this time it’s Fofana who has fun with the ASSE defense. Only the winger enters the area and curls his shot, which is saved for a corner by Gautier Larsonneur.

Lacazette’s post (26th) !

Lyon continued to push forward, and after Larsonneur’s save, the Gones tried their luck again, Lacazette getting into the area and taking his chance. His low shot hits the post. It’s getting closer.

What a save from Larsonneur (25th)!

A perfect cross from Veretout on the right, Lacazette misses it but Tolisso volleys the ball back to Larsonneur, who makes a marvellous save.

Batubinsika again (24th)

Tagliafico, 20 meters out, is not attacked and unleashes a dry shot. Batubinsika throws himself at it and pushes it away.

Stasin’s header (21st)!

Scare on the Gones goal. Davitashvili caught Maitland-Niles off guard on the left and crossed perfectly for Stassin. The Greens striker headed the ball wide. The ball grazed Perri’s left-hand post.

Nadé-Cherki contact (20th)

Another fine Lyon attack, with Maitland-Niles passing to Lacazette, who looks for Cherki deep in the box. Nadé defended well and forced the Lyon man into a foul.

Batubinsika vigilant (18th)

Fofana again on the left, Lyon’s most lively player, his cross is turned away for a corner by Batubinsika, who gets the better of Lacazette.

Tolisso’s inbound cross (17th)

Lyon pushed forward, this time with Tolisso in the thick of the action. He attempts a cross for Lacazette which Larsonneur intercepts in the air.

Fofana’s fine cross (15th)

Fofana is on the move, dribbling past Maçon before firing in a low cross. Lacazette is too short and ASSE can clear. Lyon are finally in the game.

Two Cherki-Lacazette (14th)

Lyon’s triplet, Fofana-Cherki-Lacazette, combine well together. The latter two came dangerously close, but Larsonneur was soon at Cherki’s feet.

First shot for Les Verts (10th)

ASSE dominate on the right, Davitashvili crosses to Boakye who shoots well, Perri catches the ball well.

Perri’s first outing (8th)

The first thrill on Lyon’s goal. From a Green corner, Perri uses his fists to push the ball away. Hampered by the fog, the Lyon goalkeeper came close to missing.

Play resumes (7th)

7 minutes later, play resumes with a Lyon touch.

The players warm up again (4th)

The match doesn’t restart and the 22 players take the opportunity to warm up. The fog still hasn’t lifted.

Match already interrupted (1st)

TV broadcasting is impossible, as a thick fog has descended on the stadium due to the numerous smoke bombs. Referee Willy Delajod waits for the fog to lift. The VAR center has complained about the lack of visibility.

Here we go

The Verts kick off at a blazing Groupama Stadium.

Lyon derby figures

In their own arena and with their own fans, Les Gones are superior to their nemesis. Since 2000, Saint-Étienne have won just two of their 21 meetings in Lyon, drawing six and losing 13.

The stakes of the meeting

In 8th place with 15 points, Lyon must win to keep their European hopes alive. Saint-Étienne, for their part, are 16th and want to move away from the red zone.

Lyon will be keeping a close eye on its stands during the derby

Despite a travel ban on St Etienne supporters for Sunday’s sold-out Lyon-Saint-Etienne derby (8:45pm) on Ligue 1’s 11th day, Lyon will be keeping a close eye on its stands during the derby, Olympique Lyonnais will be keeping a close eye on behavior in the stands. This match has been classified as a very high risk match (5 out of 5) by the Direction nationale de lutte contre le hooliganisme (DNLH, part of the French Ministry of the Interior).

Saint-Etienne’s XI

Same old, same old: Les Verts field the same team as for their win against Strasbourg (2-0) on the final day. Stassin is up front and will be supported by ASSE star Zuriko Davitashvili and Boakye on the wings. Behind them, Saint-Etienne’s defense will have to be solid, as the club has already conceded 24 goals in 10 games this season.

OL’s line-up

Olympique Lyonnais lined up their main team for this Derby. A classic 4-3-3 with Lacazette-Fofana-Cherki up front. In midfield, Veretout is a surprise starter alongside Matic and Tolisso. At the back, we have the classic Maitland-Niles line-up, with Caleta-Car, Niakhaté, Tagliafico and Perri in goal.

Lyon’s 5 defining derbies of the 21st century

The biggest victory, the worst defeat, the most prolific derby… On this derby day, take a look back at five of Lyon’s most memorable derbies of the 21st century.

“We have to humiliate them for good”

A few hours before the derby between OL and ASSE, Les Gones president John Textor said he wanted to “humiliate” the Greens. “We have to win both derbies and we have to do our best to humiliate them. Sorry, but that has to be our objective. That’s what the fans want and that’s what I want. Be respectful, but definitely humiliate them”.he told l’Equipe.
