Trump and Pompeo, two different visions

Mike Pompeo, ex-director of the CIA, was tipped to become head of the Pentagon. This “hawkThe “hawk” from the right wing of the Republican party quickly won the confidence of a president inexperienced on the international stage, while taking care not to overshadow him. In particular, he was responsible for the withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and the unexpected rapprochement with North Korea.

In July, he unveiled a plan for Ukraine that was the antithesis of the arguments on which Donald Trump campaigned. The plan involved new arms transfers and sanctions against Russia’s energy sector.

In July, he had also been recruited by Japanese steel giant Nippon Steel to plead its case in the takeover of US Steel, which Donald Trump has promised to oppose.

A risk of “chaos

After two years of carrying Donald Trump’s voice on the international stage, Nikki Haley had herself become the final obstacle between the ex-president and the Republican nomination, running in the primary before dropping out in March.

She had played the style and generation change card during her campaign, warning of a risk of “chaos” in the event of another Trump presidency. Then the assassination attempt against the candidate reshuffled the cards, and she had finally come out to support him at the Republican convention in Milwaukee in mid-July.
